Wool and leather give the best warmth and are popular in boot industries. Riding boots are shoes specially designed for horseback riding, a long tradition of equestrianism, the skill of riding horses. Horse riding whether for recreational, sports, or even working activities require special shoes for more comfort. To mention one, the boots are made to specific length so that the rider’s leg does not get scratched by the saddle during the ride. The heel design is also as such for safety purposes.  Modern horseback riding boots are usually designed with low heels, although the western boot type are still made with relatively higher heels. There are different types of boots for different kinds of horseback riding, especially known by the English. A pair of riding boots are customized for horse shows, pleasure riding, field boots, hunting boots, paddock boots, western boots, each with different characteristics.

Field boot have lacings, for more comfort and usually come in black color. The boots are even worn by motorbike officers and have extra leather layer on the toe side. Dress boots, worn by show jumper riders, are without lacings also usually come in black color. The type of riding boots is worn for formal riding occasions. Also traditionally made in black, hunt boots have tan colored cuffs. Paddock boots, that are considered as the most multipurpose somewhat look like military boots.
